Vet Visit Prep Checklist
Use this before an appointment to organize symptoms, ask clearer questions, and understand what may affect the final bill.
Start the checklist1. Before the appointment
- Write down the main symptom and when it started.
- Note whether the problem is getting better, worse, or staying the same.
- Bring photos or short videos if the symptom is hard to describe.
- List recent changes in food, treats, medications, supplements, litter, bedding, routines, or environment.
- Bring previous invoices, lab results, medication names, and clinic instructions if they may be relevant.
2. Questions to ask during the visit
- What are the most likely causes?
- Which tests or treatments are essential today?
- Which options can wait, and what would make them urgent?
- What signs would mean I should come back or seek emergency care?
- Can I get a written estimate before we proceed?
- What will change the treatment plan?
3. Cost clarity
- Ask what is included in the exam fee.
- Ask whether lab work, imaging, medication, sedation, hospitalization, or follow-up visits may be separate costs.
- Ask whether there are lower-cost alternatives or staged options when appropriate.
- Ask for the expected range if the exact total is not yet known.
- Keep the estimate and final invoice together for future reference.
4. After the visit
- Save the diagnosis, invoice, medication instructions, and follow-up plan.
- Set reminders for medication times, rechecks, or symptom updates.
- Track symptoms for the next 24 to 72 hours.
- Write down what improved, what worsened, and any side effects.
- Contact the clinic if instructions are unclear or warning signs appear.
